How to identify Loop Genres
Posted in How to on February 25, 2011 | Leave a Comment »
Sit back for a moment and think about what truly defines a genre. Is it the individual sounds and loops themselves or rather the combination of loops, sounds, tempo and dynamics? One might realize that a single loop could belong to multiple sub-genres of the same genre. This makes choosing what genres to include in a loop search an extremely confusing process.
There are hundreds of sub-genres of music and trying to include them all in a loop search just feels like overkill. This is especially true when someone says something like: “This loop could be used in goa trance, psy trance, euro trance, tech trance and even acid trance!” So which category of trance do I put the loop in?
Hmmm….What about just “Trance”?
Makes sense doesn’t it?
I finally settled on a list I felt to be appropriate for the loop search.
- Acid
- Ambient
- Blues
- Breakbeat
- Chill Out
- Chiptune
- Cinematic
- Country
- Dance
- Drum n Bass
- Dub
- Dubstep
- Electro
- Electronica
- Funk
- Grime
- HipHop
- House
- IDM
- Industrial
- Jazz
- Jungle
- Latin
- Metal
- Minimal
- Pop
- Rap
- Reggae
- Reggaeton
- RnB
- Rock
- Techno
- Trance
- World
There were some exceptions I made that create some very slight redundancies. These decisions were made because some genres are just too popular to not include. There are other factors such as Drum n Bass being very similar to Jungle but many would argue the differences are strong enough to justify it.
To create this list I spent a fair amount of time researching the distinction between different genres. I do not however consider myself an expert on genres so I would like to hear what you think. Drop me a comment with your feedback.
